Spring is in the air, and even though temperatures in the Valley have been spring-like since January, something about March just feels rejuvenating. It’s exactly why the term “spring cleaning” was created. Spring is the perfect time to get to those scrubbing and decluttering tasks you have been putting off through the fall and winter months. However, it can be difficult to muster the motivation to get to your cleaning tasks when the weather is so nice. Here are a few decluttering tips to make some of those tasks more manageable, and get you outdoors enjoying the weather that much faster.
1. Baby steps. Write down all of the spots in your home that are cluttered and drive you crazy. The spots that always make you frustrated and weigh in the back of your mind. This could be the overflowing basket of clean clothes you never get around to putting away, the kitchen countertops or even the bottles of expired medications in your bathroom cabinets. Write it all down, then pick the top three or four.
2. Focus on your top spots. Set aside some time to clear those top three or four locations only. Don’t feel like you have to deep clean your entire home in one weekend, because it can become overwhelming and then you might end up accomplishing nothing. When the first few are finished, plan another weekend to tackle the next few options.
3. Make it fun. You can get the whole family involved in cleaning and decluttering. For example, if a top spot happens to be the kids’bedrooms, make it a game. See who can clear out the most things from their room to donate to charity. The winner could get to choose a movie for the family to watch together, or what they want for dinner that evening. Take it a step further and help them decide what charity to donate to, and then go together as a family to drop off everything. It will teach them the value in cleaning their space, as well as seeing firsthand the good donating can do for others.
